What happens when you plant zucchinis in your vege patch and then go away for a few days?
This:
They're just slightly enormous.
I've discovered that cutting them into rounds, removing the seeds and stuffing the cavity works rather nicely for oh-my-goodness-it's-a-monster-zucchini. We've also been eating a lot of vaguely normal sized zucchini at the moment: zucchini and feta frittata, zucchini parmagiana, zucchini in stir fry, zucchini on the side... If you have any yummy zucchini recipes that you'd like to share, please let me know! And we only planted 2 seeds!?!
On another note, I've signed up to make granny squares for Sarah London's Crochet a Rainbow project which will result in a whole lot of granny blankets being given to people who lost most (if not all) of their things in the still-happening Australian floods. Sarah is collecting granny squares from volunteers all over the world and stitching them together into blankets. For me this is great - I get to feel vaguely useful, get to make granny squares and don't have to sew them together (which I find rather tedious). I'm pleased to be able to contribute something other than just money - money is very necessary (obviously), but it feels quite impersonal, and it's good to be able to DO something.*
If you would like to crochet some granny squares too, go and check out all the details by clicking on the button below, or in the sidebar.

I can't remember which book it came from but I remember a bit that talks about living in a small town the only time you need to lock your car is at zucchini season, otherwise you come back from doing your shopping and kind neighbours have dumped their excess zuc's on you. They are prolific. I'm not a fan. When we grow them here the girls make zucchinis in bikinis which is always fun.
Apart from the zuc's which I did not plant this season, are you sure we aren't internet twins? I've just finished up 6 squares for Sarah London and have them ready to send off. I too am glad not to have to sew them together, sewing the ends in was bad enough LOL!
Can't wait to see the colour combo's you come up with.
I wish I knew how to crochet granny squares, maybe I might get my mum to teach me so I can make some. Zucchinis always seem to grow so big when you arent watching dont they. My cousin's wife used to scoop out the middle and put a mince meat conconction in the middle and bake them in the oven. Apparently they were nice. I always grate zucchinis and pop them into lasagne sauce.
If I could crochet I'd most certainly donate a square or 5, yet another reason to get to 'learn to crochet' on my to-do list. No help here with the zuc's sorry! Vic xx
i also have a surfeit of zucchinis . so far i've been making zucchini slice and zucchini cake. today, i think i am going to make a huge zucchini and lemon risotto - i put in lemon juice and some rind, with Parmesan and the zucchini chopped up small. it works really well! after that though, i am also running out of ideas... maybe i'll check back here and see what else people are suggesting...
I saw that granny square flood relief effort the other day. Thanks for the reminder to go back and sign up (I meant to at the time and didn't for some reason).
Feels good to be able to contribute handmade.
