A skirt and a question of thread

Yesterday, this....
became this!
I finished it about 9.30 last night, after starting sewing about 8pm, so it was a super-fast project! And is #2 on my tally of finished projects for the year. It's basically a tube with a hem and some elastic*, but I didn't use a pattern and I'm pretty chuffed with how it turned out. I have definitely learnt a few things since this time last year, like pressing seams open is good, and ironing and THEN pinning things like hems and elastic casing makes things a lot easier!

The fabric was cotton (I think?) on sale from Spotlight a few months ago, about 140 cm wide (I took a long stride and measured around my legs to get the required width) and about 75 cm long. I cut it with the selvedge along the bottom because of the pattern on the fabric.

Choosing the right colour thread proved to be a challenge, because of the variety of light and dark colours in the fabric. I eventually went for a dark blue because I was machine hemming it and the bottom stripes have quite a bit of blue in them. But I'm still not convinced. How do you choose thread colour for something like this?

Even so, while it's not (at all) a tailored fit, it's lightweight and perfect for a hot day. So I declare it a success!

*I saw this idea on a blog several months ago, but I can't remember where!! I think it was based in the US and it was written by someone who seemed to really know what they were talking about in regards to sewing! Anyway, it suited my purposes on this occasion perfectly.

I'm a huge believer in either hide your stitching OR go for it with a stand out contrasting colour!! The patchwork quilt i have on today's post had a clashing of colours like a rainbow, so i picked my favourite from the lot - used a deep pinky purple for the quilting & it's divine, works against every colour from blue, green, to yellow & pink. I'm thrilled with the result. Be daring, love that you used navy & if i do that - i often do 2 rows of parrallel stitching just to make it really look like i meant to do & i wasn't just being lazy by not bothering to rethread the machine!! Looks ace, wear it with pride. Love Posie

I'm totally fainting in shock over here.
- Winged a project without a pattern.
- Started AND FINISHED said project in an evening.
Where is the old unfinished Dillpickle I knew and tolerated?!!!

Love it. Very cool. Hope to see it up close sometime...

Oh so cute! I love a bit of no pattern, make it up as you go along type sewing.
I try to match the cotton, but if not, I just use a contrasting colour and try to make it look like it was supposed to stand out.

Lovely skirt! I agree with Posie - decide if you can/want to hide stitching or let it stand out. When I'm using multicoloured fabric, I usually use the colour I like the most or the colour I will wear with it the most. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter! Talk about ticking off the list! Nic xx

Great skirt! I like to two colour combo. I have been thinking about making a skirt or dress too but never seem to get around to it. Maybe I need a To Do list to inspire/energise me? xo

Love the colors, you did such a great job!

Wish I was more of a skirt girl, maybe moving to the desert will change that for me :)

what a gorgeous skirt. i love it. i was always taught to use the colour thread that matched the dominant colour in the fabric. that is usually the lighter colour. but i have become a fan of bend the rules sewing so i guess whatever goes
